Spring break destinations can be paradise for the single college student- the possibility of fraternizing with MTV VJ’s and the promise of exposed flesh are key attractions to those flying solo this break. Such attractions however, do not cater to those involved in monogamous relationships.
This week’s recipe goes out to all you lovers out there. Here’s to accompanying your boo home for the first time to meet the fam.
Everyone sweats that first impression, but remember, if the parents in question have any love for their own child, they are more or less forced to think you must be somewhat normal and interesting. But ties to their offspring and personalities aside, a good impression can be solidified with the appropriate gift.
Edible gifts are the universal parental consent win overs. You can’t go wrong with food, especially food that screams “Comfort” and “Responsibility,” instead of “Possible Pregnancy” or “I Have Spent Time in Jail.”
Rice pudding is cheap, highly delectably, easily transportable, and almost impossible to blunder. On top of that, it only takes 20 min. combined time for preparation and cooking.
You need:
1/2 Cup Uncooked Rice (hopefully the rice part isn’t surprising…white rice is best)
2 Cups water
1 1/2 Cup Milk (use whole milk for enhanced sweetness)
1/4 Cup Sugar
1/4 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
1/4 Cup Raisins
*extra exciting add ins: walnuts, various dried fruit, sliced pineapple…work your creativity, and if you don’t have any this is a good time to work at it.
Combine rice, salt, water, and raisins in heavy medium saucepan and cook, covered, over medium heat until rice is tender, about 20 minutes. Drain off and discard water. Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk to saucepan. Return to heat and cook over low heat until mixture thickens slightly, about 10 minutes. Serve warm to mirror warmth of own heart, and make sure to be smiling profusely in general direction of the parents while enjoying. Serves six.
