Who: Working girls Vanessa and Melissa say yes to roller-boogy and retro.

Where: Downtown, Burlington

Cummerbund and Fanny Pack: Are you guys from the area?

Vanessa: Kinda. . . I actually went to high school, 6th grade to sophomore year, in Richmond. VT. But I was born in Charlottesville, VA

M: I’m from Florida. . . and I’ve been here for about two years.

C & F P:How would you describe yourself?

V: I’d say I’m pretty eclectic. I mean, towards the end of high school I was more on the punk end of things. I really had a lot of fun going to these gothy-80s dance parties. Since then, I guess I just incorporate the 80s style. It’s really not something that I’m trying to do-they are just the things I end up liking. Generally speaking, everything of mine is vintage, from thrift stores, or from my mom’s closet.

M: I went to fashion school for a few years… I got really into Roccoco, or like, just a general older style of clothing. When I’m not at work, I like to wear a lot of ruffles-especially puffy sleeves. (Chuckles) It’s kind of a disorder.

C & F P: How does living in Vermont affect the way you dress?

V: I think I’m always aware of the fact that I’m in Vermont, and a lot of people here are just about function. That’s totally understandable. I mean, winter is so long, and your life sucks if you don’t wear big boots in the winter…Everyone’s guilty of fashion choices, even if they’re trying to put out that illusion that they’re not.

M: True That.

C & F P: What do you like to do on your free time? Any personal interests?

M: I go to school full time and work full time, so on my free time I like to do. . . nothing. (Chuckles) Just relax and listen to records and eat pizza in bed. Sometimes I make pizza, or I’ll get Freschetta Pizza-it’s frozen but it’s so good.

C & F P: Any last words on what it’s like being you in your clothes?

V: My favorite is jeans and a T-shirt. Gray, not Blue jeans

M: I like gold jewelry… but not real gold.
