Hangs

The “hangs” of the Davis Center, in their entire earth tone splendor, seem to offer a little something for everyone.
On the 1st floor, you will find one of the largest lounges in the building, located on your right when you walk in the back entrance. Most of the floor space in this room was being monopolized by a poster sale while I was there although there was ample room for several clusters of chairs and small coffee tables.
I was admittedly surprised to see President Fogel himself relaxing in a chair, clearly enjoying the plush seat. I couldn’t seem to find the name of this particular lounge area and upon asking someone at the info desk, they jokingly suggested that someone probably needed to donate some more money first.
The noise level in the lounge was considerable, and I was amused to see that desktop computers nearby were spouting screensaver wisdom such as “Save a tree, use a travel mug!” There are three pool tables and one foosball table in the lounge and the pool equipment is free for any UVM student.
For those who want to see and be seen there is the Olin Atrium. It’s a small area on the first floor just inside the back entrance and right next door to Brennan’s Pub. The chairs and tables in this section are next to Terrill Hall, which has been swallowed almost whole by the monster that is the Davis Center.
The constant traffic and noise from people entering and exiting the building make Olin an interesting choice for studying but if visibility is what you are seeking, this is the place.
Upstairs on the 2nd floor is the Chicago Landing. It is obviously meant for dining, though most students seem to prefer to zone out on their laptops and take advantage of the wireless internet. Down the hall is the Mt. Mansfield room, which houses an abundance of tables and chairs yet lacks personality. It sits awkwardly far away from the food vendors but many students seem to recognize its “high school cafeteria” appeal.
If you’re feeling especially ambitious, climb the stairs to the 4th floor and venture into the Livak fireplace lounge. A yet-to-be-discovered gem, Livak is almost as quiet as Billings during its unofficial nap times but with twice the sunlight and more comfortable furniture.
Down the hall from Livak is the Grand Ballroom. While it is not accessible right now due to ongoing construction, the Summit Room off of the Grand Ballroom has the best view of Lake Champlain the Davis Center offers.
With varying degrees of natural light, noise, and visibility, the Davis Center, with its unvarying palette of earth tones surely has good hangs for all.
