I Like Girls Who Smoke Cigarettes

Girl smoking cigaretteBy Max C. Bookman

Yeah, we know cigarettes kill. Our generation is the first to grow up in a world where everyone knows how bad cigarettes are. We’ve been subject to relentless anti-tobacco campaigns, health classes, informational videos ad nauseum. We’ve all seen those Truth commercials with hip young activists confronting evil Phillip Morris executives Michael Moore-style. We know all about the zillions of horrible chemicals packed in every glorious puff.

Our childhood role models didn’t include the Marlboro man on TV, and none of us can recall the days before “where can I go smoke” replaced “where’s your ashtray?” Our generation knows that not everyone is doing it. In fact, we’re well aware that most people don’t smoke cigarettes, and the number who do is steadily declining. For our grandparents, people smoked cigarettes because it was the thing to do.

But for our generation, smokers do it because it’s the thing not to do. And honestly, after hearing “cigarettes are death” our whole lives, how could any self-respecting rebellious young person not be tempted to try just one? Besides, we UVMers love counterculture shit like that.

We’re more rebellious than the average college students; from our environmentalists to our new football players, from skateboards and pot to Red Rocks and naked bike riding— our interests don’t usually fit the norm very well. We’re all fighting the power somehow. Cigarette smokers are also fighting the establishment, and let me tell you, The Man has definitely quit smoking boges.

The past ten years have been the decade of tobacco hate, and The Man has been coming down hard. As many as 30 states, including Vermont, have enacted laws banning smoking in certain publicly-accessible places like bars, restaurants, and workplaces. The anti-smoking group Reality Check is lobbying the MPAA to slap an R rating on movies that show actors smoking. Amusement parks have adopted “Designated Smoking Zones”. States like New Jersey have raised the legal age to purchase tobacco to 19 (dumb), and Vermont has enacted a ridiculous state law requiring smokers to be 20 feet away from any building before lighting up. Come on.

Yes, we are the first generation of cigarette smokers to be an oppressed minority. But like all oppressed communities, we band together. There are ample unspoken connections between cigarette smokers.

Too-serious RAs who enforce the 20 foot rule in the rain will unknowingly bond perfect strangers as they share dirty looks. Light acquaintances will be happy to bum cigs, share lighters, and chatter about preferred brands. Neighbors will connect through the look that says “I feel ya,” when puffing at 2 in the morning in the snow.

Like many cigarette smokers, I’ve been back and forth plenty of times. I had my first cigarette in my aunt’s basement when I was 14. It was a disgusting Newport 100. But turning 18, and the subsequent ability to buy a pack at the Shell station really got me going. Cigarettes are a fun way to meet people in the dorms.Smoking

But then I would get really turned off and stop smoking. Then I would start again. Then stop. Then start, and so on. I understand the concerns of nonsmokers. I’ve raced across both poles of the smoking spectrum myself. Cigs smell gross to those who don’t smoke, and it’s annoying to get hit with a blast of unexpected secondhand smoke on the way to class.

With that said, non-smokers have to put things in perspective. Smoking laws need to make smoking spaces that smokers and nonsmokers find acceptable. The current mentality finds no fault in inconveniencing smokers as much as possible.

Keep in mind that human adults, on average, breathe 23,000 times a day. So, is it really that horrible to deal with a miniscule amount of secondhand smoke here and there?

Non-smokers can be annoying. Smokers are ostracized and inconvenienced. The evidence of how unhealthy cigarettes are is everywhere. It’s a hard knock life for smokers of the 21st century.

That’s why I like girls who smoke cigarettes.

They say, “hell with all the evidence, I’m gonna smoke.” They look at all those Dr. Downers in the medical community and say, “I’m young, I’ll do what I want.” They get lectured by non-smokers and say, “I just don’t give a fuck.” They’re not worried about what guys think of their habit, and they’re certainly not worried about conforming. They know they have flaws, and have no problem standing outside and puffing them away. Girls who smoke cigarettes are confident, and they kick ass.

Besides, cigarettes are more than just a filthy vicious nicotine addiction. They’re a great vehicle for some quick socialization, they cut stress, they’re great after sex, great after pot, and come on, you know they do look really cool.

So keep fighting The Man. If Barack Obama is a cig addict, (seriously) you can be too. Go puff 10 feet from the library and see who has got a problem with it. I’ll come join you. Hell, maybe I can get your number?

Just make sure you keep some Trident in your purse next to those Marlboros.

This is the grossest thing ever. Smoking smells bad and it’s suicide. Sure, it may be fighting the man, but there are other ways to do that. If you wanna have fun, go to an amusement park, buddy.

I am a smoker….and as much as I enjoyed this blog. I’m quitting this week because I might look cool now….but in 20 years…I won’t look so hot. Neither will my lungs.

I am 60 yrs old and if all that junk about 2nd hand smoke were true,,,,,everyone over the age of 50 would be dead. I am sick and tired of the NON SMOKERS having all their way. I thought this was a FREE country. disgusted. I will keep on smoking and living out of spite. My grandfather smoked until he was only 87 and my stepfather until he was 85. my non smoking grandparents died in their 70’s,,,

Well…I agree that smoking is NOT good for you…but I also must admit that I believe that if I see a sexy woman light up a cigarette, I think that is just simply HOT! It’s that whole “bad girl” thing…there’s something extremely entoxicating about being on the receiving end of a nice tight exhaled stream of smoke from a really hot chick! Of course, there’s something disgusting about being on the receiving end of an old grumpy woman (or man) smoking too. LOL

    Heyy there.
im a very heavy smoker. i’ve started when i was 12 yrs old. my pops bought them for me. he was a heavy smoker himself. sorry if it might bad or wrong for my father to do that but honestly… i dont give a fuck.
for years i have been told that im going to eventually die from it. fyi.. i kno that. im going to die anyways so why cant i die from smoking if thats the way i choose? ive lost friends. and ive gained friends. but the worst of all is hearing how guys dont like girls who smoke cigarretes. now, ive heard this all through high school and it really did bother me. i mean, most all of the guys who’ve told me this, smoked themselfs. i didn’t understand why they think it would be ok if they smoked but the girls they date couldn’t.. so thank you for writing this piece because, yeah i did enjoy the fact that there’s atleast some guys out there who think its sexy. i think its sexy myself =]].
i eventually have gotten boyfriends who dont mind the fact that i smoke. thank god. i just hate the fact that most all guys can be soooo picky!
    thanks again!

I totally agree, I’m a girl who smokes and I love it. I hate people trying to control what I do with my life. The health warnings are out there I know about them so I’ve made my own choice. What you said about them being good for so many things is so true, well said. Shame you live in America, I’m a British gal.

I hate this article. Secondhake smokers don’t need to take the smoke of first hand smokers. Smokers smoking harms non-smokers, therefore, its unfair and unjust to secondhand smokers. I hate people who smoke because they believe its cool. Smoking doesn’t really relieve stress nicely. IT first damages your brain and since the smoke damages some of you memory, thats how you forget things and don’t get stress. See the pictures of smoking and the problems of smoking and how it will back fire upon your life. There are many other alternative routes and approachs than smoking. Take it. Smoking is harmful. Go smoke if you would desire a slow painful death. You knew how many effects there are of smoking. THOSE are PROVEN EFFECTS. not fake.

nice blog. As a recent recruit it’s nice to hear that there’s support out there, not just dirty looks in the street. The main thing I hate about not smokers is that they’re so smug about it, what is there to be smug about? That you have different opinions to mine? And yeah whatever anyone says about health, it’s still fucking cool.

  13. mel on April 10th, 2008 12:35 pm

hey. i like the articel. i’m also a smoker and i love it. but i don’t like all of the comments above mine! you can’t say the non smokers are bad people or you hate them. that’s the same thing they do. and they’re right! smoking is NOT good for our health and most smokers will die a long painfull death.. so try to understand them, becouse also many secoundhand smokers die (some of my friends..)
i think smoking is no problem if you’re not addicted to it. cigarettes shouldn’t take over your life. yes, smoking is sexy, yes smoking is cool, but not if you’re killing someone else or you can’t live without it..

    cheers&kisses from austria

Typical. Any mention of cigarettes and a couple of anti-smokers jump out to dutifully repeat the myths. Truth is not even one of the heavily biased anti smoking studies can show passive smoke to be anywhere near as harmful as olive oil and 6 out of 7 studies show no risk at all. It’s all there to see in the online medical journals.

I bet none of them would turn down the girl at the top of your blog though.

Nice to see that some guys appreciate us!
lol have to feel sorry for non smokers they so don’t know what they are missing.

I started smoking because I lurrvvvvv guys who smoke and I could get close to those gorgeous bad boys. And I began to watch how girls who knew how to smoke had a hypnotic effect on guys.

I don’t give a f*** about the health risks it makes it even more bad ass dangerous. It’s always been glamorous but now it is wicked too just makes it more alluring no?
So much power over the guys just by lighting a cigarette……and from my experience the guys who don’t like it aren’t worth looking at any way.
Getting married soon to such a hot guy who loves me smoking and I like him smoking too….sooo cool.

I light up a cig for you Max thx x

Hot picture at the top! Good God! I agree, girls smoking is f*cking hot! :)

You’re fucking pathetic. A girl saying fuck you to her health and her own life is sexy? [Last sentence has been redacted — the statement made was clearly untrue (as well as disturbing) and is potentially libelous toward the author of the piece. –Website Editor]
