Recap
Sunday was a very important day in determining the playoff contenders in Major League Baseball. If some of you decided to turn away from the football games while nursing your hangovers, this is what you would have seen:
The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies went into the last game of the season tied for first place. With seventeen games left in the season, the Mets had a seven game lead over the Phils but had managed to piss it away like last night’s Pabst. The Phillies’ 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals coupled with the Mets’ 8-1 loss to the Florida Marlins put the Phillies in sole possession of the division and the Mets out of a playoff spot. The Mets really did try hard to give it all away and they managed to do so. Way to go guys.
The other undecided playoff spot was the NL Wildcard. Coming into Sunday, the
Colorado Rockies trailed the
San Diego Padres by one game. The Padres’ loss to the
Milwaukee Brewers coupled with the Rockies’ win over the
Arizona Diamondbacks put the two tied for the playoff berth with one game to decide who gets in.
After finishing in the cellar in 2006, the
Cubs managed to make an impressive turnaround, capturing the NL West. The
Red Sox, after what seemed like a hopeless freefall for most of September, were also able to finally wrestle the AL East from the
Yankees. All other games played in baseball were, in fact, for shits and giggles.
Divisional Series Predictions
Yankees vs. Indians - Here’s a match up of the best pitching (Indians) versus the best hitting (Yankees). The Indians claim the best record, but the Yankees boast the best record in the second half of the season. Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang along with the whole Yankees offense have been dominant throughout and will be able to match up against C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona. In addition, you can’t duplicate experience. Yankees will win in 5.
Red Sox vs. Angels - This series should be funnier to watch than that Youtube video of the guy getting Tazered. The Angles have lost a big run producer in Garret Anderson, and the Red Sox just got back Manny, which really needs no explanation. Red Sox in 3.
Diamondbacks vs. Cubs - The Cubs’ storybook season will most definitely come to an end against the best team in the National League. Besides, didn’t you know the Cubs are cursed? Diamondbacks in 4.
Phillies vs. Rockies or Padres - First off, the Rockies should win the one game playoff easily. They are coming off with the momentum after tying the Padres in the last game of the season. The Padres, in addition, average as many hits as Excite.com*** these days. The Rockies will then continue their Coors-sponsored rampage past the Phillies in 4 games. If the Padres manage to salvage the Wildcard, they too will beat the Phillies, but in 5 games. Sorry Phils, but you don’t really deserve to be in the playoffs. The Mets just suck. *** Editor’s note: Here are Excite.com’s visitor stats:
