Outspoken
adjective – Description of one who refuses to conform to commonly held views by incessantly sharing critical and controversial sentiments to the contrary. Presidential hopeful Mike Gravel gained public notice for touting his outspoken views at Democratic debates.

Resolve
noun – Firm determination to stand up in the face of adversity; usually invoked when willpower is in question. Despite his abysmal poll numbers, Mike Gravel has repeatedly ensured supporters that his resolve to win the nomination has never been stronger.

Marginalize
verb – The action that politicians take to stay in power by treating views of competitors as insignificant and peripheral. Although Gravel’s progressive message resonates with many Democrats, his intense rhetoric has provided a means for frontrunners Clinton and Obama to marginalize him.
