File-sharer Nailed for $220,000
-Last Friday, the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) won its lawsuit against Jammie Thomas, a single mom with two kids. She stood accused of sharing 24 songs through the peer-network
Kazaa. Richard Gabriel, the RIAA’s lawyer, focused specifically on 24 of the 1702 songs on Ms. Thomas’ hard drive. The $220,000 fine could have been significantly worse; the jury could have fined the defendant upwards of $150,000/copy instead of just $10,000/copy.
