- Kibaki, who has held office since 2002, has faced accusations of corruption and abuse of power.

- In 2005, he drafted a new constitution that would vest sweeping authority in the president, sparking criticism from members of his own cabinet. When it was voted down in a popular referendum, Kibaki dismissed the entire cabinet.

- In the recent presidential election, he won by a suspiciously overwhelming majority, leading to calls of vote-rigging.

- Violence, fueled by opposition leaders, is currently erupting across the country, crippling the African nation.
