“Are there three people in this debate?”

-Comments from John Edwards during a recent debate among the three remaining Democratic presidential hopefuls in which his participation was greatly overshadowed by Clinton and Obama. The Edwards campaign has struggled to gain traction, particulary in separating the former senator from the two remaining contenders in the minds of voters. Edwards placed third in South Carolina.

“His death is a tragic loss.”

- Mary-Kate Olsen, friend of the Australian-born actor Heath Ledger, commenting on his recent death. Ledger, who garnered acclaim in his portrayal of a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain, was found dead in his New York apartment last Tuesday. Despite his death, Ledger will still appear as the Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, Dark Night.

“I told them to let [the Palestinians] come in and eat and buy food and then return.”

-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, remarking on the destruction of the wall separating the troubled Gaza Strip from Egypt by Hamas, the militant group-turned sheriff that is the Strip’s political authority. Throngs of Palestinians, deprived of basic resources by Israel’s current blockade of the region, poured through the wall, under the uneasy eyes of their Egyptian hosts.

“Get over it, kid!”

-Wife of a Virginia public school superintendent and victim of a viral YouTube video who went on an angry rant at a student who called their home demanding to know why a snow day had not been called for that morning. The woman seriously flipped.

“Tonight, the cynics…were told a different story by the good people of South Carolina.”

-Senator Barack Obama, following his sizeable victory over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in the South Carolina Democratic primary. The state, which over the past week has witnessed a personal and divisive campaign among the three contenders, is the last major Democratic contest until the watershed Super Tuesday on February 5.
