Developing Story: UVM Restricts Free Speech

Published April 8, 2008

The Water Tower has learned from members of the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), the organizers of Tent City, that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) may be suing the University of Vermont to remove restrictions on free speech enacted by the school administration that violate the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

SLAP, which was denied permission to continue its Central Campus protest for Livable Wages, has shifted ownership of Tent City to Students Against War, who have been granted a permit to continue the protest from this Wednesday to Friday. However, according to SLAP members, the school administration has barred all protestors from speaking about Livable Wages. If so much as a poster mentions the Livable Wage Campaign, the protesters will be immediately denied permission to continue.

At time of publication, The Water Tower was unable to reach administration officials for comment. But if accurate, this does indeed constitute a direct violation of free speech and lawful assembly guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

Stop by and support Tent City!
