I really enjoyed your illustration for Bill and Mantone’s article. About the article itself, I was really surprised about much of the information divulged in the first half, particularly as it pertains to UVM’s investments. The fact that millions of dollars of public money and our tuition money is being invested in these corporations with polar opposite world views and missions other than our own at UVM is, for lack of a better word, a mindfuck.
I definitely appreciate the idea of The Water Tower’s hosting the Tent City manifesto, but I think that The Water Tower could really do the University and student body a favor by divulging more information about these investments as its own feature in a direct, open way.
I feel that many students might be put off by the association of this information with SLAP, an unfortunate impact of the ignorant association of living wages and our tuition costs.
However, I also feel like a lot of students would be fundamentally opposed to the University’s managing their money in that capacity in light of its reluctance to provide a living wage, rising tuition costs, endless construction projects, and Fogel’s interminable quest for elite status.
Granted, it’s a free market and a free country, but as a public institution, we the taxpayers and those of us who pay tuition deserve a certain degree of transparency, which for me, until I read the latest Water Tower, was obscured only by my own ignorance of the University’s investments. Anyway, keep on keeping on, fight the power, semper fudge.
Keep it real.
Chuck.
